Sushi Sunday – October 2016

A new sushi adventure is always fun,
and we finally made it to our new sushi restaurant in town this month.

I know, sushi and burrito sound odd, but once you give it a try you will understand.  It is a flavorful combination of seafood, chicken, beef or tofu, and vegetables, surrounded by a thin layer of rice, wrapped up in seaweed, fried or not fried.  All of them that we have tried are good and have many layers of flavor.  They are a large amount of food in my opinion..which is a good thing.  Easy to share, or have leftovers.

Starters –

VEGETABLE EGG ROLLS –  At first look I thought there wasn’t much to them until I took my first bite.  They are packed with flavor.  I am not sure of all of the vegetables inside, although light and crispy on the outside, soft and flavorful on the inside.  And the sweet and sour sauce is very light and not overpowering.

FRIED CREAM CHEESE – These are good.  Served with the same sweet sauce as the egg rolls.  Crispy outside, creamy cream cheese on the inside.

COMBO TEMPURA – Tempura is always good.  Light crisp on the outside, tasty vegetables or seafood inside.  The combo comes with a combination of shrimp and vegetables.  All had their unique flavors with a light dipping sauce.

If you aren’t into the sushi part of the menu, they do have other items along with the starters.

BENTO BOXES – Served with potstickers and white rice.

Beef Teriyaki – this was our favorite of the bento boxes we tried.  Tender steak, covered in teriyaki sauce and sesame seeds.  Very flavorful.

Chicken Teriyaki – This had good flavor, the texture was a little different than what I am used to.

Now for the Sushi Burritos.

SHRIMP LOVER (spicy) – Tempura shrimp, purple cabbage, pickled daikon, carrot, cucumber, lettuce, avocado, spicy mayo and sriracha.  We opted to have the sriracha on the side, it was a good option for us since we don’t eat a lot of spice.  So then we could just dab a little on here and there.

BUDDHA ROLL – (veggie) Tempura yam, carrot, kabocha, fresh cucumber, lettuce, tofu, tomato, special veggie sauce and spicy mayo.  I was impressed with how fresh the ingredients were and how many veggies were in this burrito.

MAUI BURRITO – Grilled spam, avocado, cucumber, spicy mayo and eel sauce.  I have heard many talk abut the spam sushi in Hawaii so I had to give this one a try.  It is tasty, this turned out to be my sons favorite.  I was worried the spam may have an overpowering saltiness but it didn’t.  I did ask them to fry it because the plain seaweed is a little overpowering to me, and I am glad I did.  The seaweed comes out crunchy with the batter around it, the spicy mayo and my favorite, the eel sauce a great combination. I had to slice it up so you could see all of the goodies better.  Even the leftovers the next day were flavorful and crispy good.
